Image: Petteri Bülow / YleYle News16:51Foreign Minister Elina Valtonen (NCP) on Friday said Finland is on track to meet Nato's five percent defence spending target.Last year, member states agreed to raise defence spending to 3.5 percent of GDP, with an additional 1.5 percent allocated to defence-related expenditures. The goal was set to be achieved within ten years.Valtonen said that achieving the target was important as it strengthens deterrence, enhances collective defence and benefits member countries' defence industries. She also condemned Russia's latest disinformation campaign against the Baltic states. In recent days, Russia has claimed that Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia have allowed their airspace to be used for drone attacks against Russia."I want to state clearly and unequivocally that Nato is not a threat to Russia, but Russia is a threat to global peace," she said. She also stressed that Russia's actions are not worrying Finland, as Finns are accustomed to living alongside an unpredictable neighbour. The United States has meanwhile announced plans to reduce its troops in Europe. Speaking ahead of the meeting, Nato Secretary General Mark Rutte said Europe needs to bolster its own defence and reduce dependence on the United States.Valtonen echoed this sentiment, but emphasised that the United States is not withdrawing from Nato and remains committed to transatlantic security.
