After weeks of relentless heat, Delhi finally got a respite on Friday as cloudy skies, scattered showers and gusty winds brought temperatures tumbling across the city. The sudden change in weather pushed the mercury below 37 degrees Celsius, ending a prolonged spell of intense heat that had gripped the national capital through much of May.The maximum temperature at Safdarjung, Delhi's base weather station, settled at 36.8 degrees Celsius, the lowest recorded in the city since May 8. Just two days earlier, the station had logged a high of 44.3 degrees Celsius, highlighting the dramatic shift in weather conditions. The cooling was felt across Delhi, with several monitoring stations recording steep declines in daytime temperatures over the last 48 hours. Ayanagar and Palam witnessed the sharpest drops, with maximum temperatures falling by more than 9 degrees Celsius.Ridge and Lodhi Road also reported significant declines as cloud cover and rain curtailed the intense summer heat.Light rainfall was recorded in parts of the city during the 24-hour period ending Friday morning. While Safdarjung, Palam and Ayanagar received a few millimetres of rain, Lodhi Road reported only traces of precipitation. The showers, however, were enough to bring temperatures down and improve outdoor conditions.Delhi Weather Update: More rain likely Weather experts attributed the change to a combination of atmospheric systems influencing northwestern India.According to private forecaster Skymet Weather, a western disturbance over the Himalayan region, coupled with a cyclonic circulation over Rajasthan and moisture-laden winds from the Bay of Bengal, has created favourable conditions for widespread pre-monsoon activity across Delhi and neighbouring areas.Skymet Vice President Mahesh Palawat said the ongoing spell is likely to be stronger and more widespread than the pre-monsoon showers experienced in April and earlier this month. He added that thunderstorm activity is expected to intensify before gradually shifting towards Gujarat around May 30-31.The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast thunderstorms accompanied by rain across Delhi until May 31. For Saturday, the weather office expects the maximum temperature to hover around 35 degrees Celsius and the minimum around 23 degrees Celsius.A yellow alert has been issued, warning of thunderstorms, lightning and rain in parts of the city.Night-time temperatures also remained below normal at most weather stations, offering residents additional relief after several days of oppressive heat.Meanwhile, Delhi's air quality showed moderate conditions despite the weather fluctuations. According to the Central Pollution Control Board, the city's Air Quality Index stood at 123 on Friday afternoon, placing it in the "moderate" category.(With PTI inputs)
