MANILA, Philippines — A Cavite-based cargo company is facing criminal charges for abandoning at various ports more than 100 containers containing thousands of balikbayan boxes meant for overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) and their families.

The Bureau of Customs (BOC) on Friday filed criminal complaint affidavits before the Department of Justice (DOJ) against the officers and employees of Makati Express Cargo, Inc. (MECI) over the balikbayan boxes left unclaimed and unpaid at the Manila International Container Port, Port of Cebu, and Port of Davao from 2024 to 2025.

MECI, a freight forwarder with various offices also abroad, is facing violations of Republic Act No. 10863, or the Customs Modernization and Tariff Act, particularly Sections 1430 and 1403.
