MANILA, Philippines — The Bureau of Customs (BOC) said on Saturday it is convening government agencies and environmental groups to coordinate the government’s response to suspected electronic waste shipments from the United States that entered the Subic Bay Freeport.
Customs Commissioner Ariel Nepomuceno said the meeting is aimed at clarifying the roles of concerned agencies, ensure compliance with environmental and customs laws, and identify appropriate legal and regulatory measures while court proceedings over the shipments remain pending.
The BOC said the move comes as it continues to pursue legal remedies related to the alleged e-waste shipments, which are under judicial review and currently on appeal through the Office of the Solicitor General.
Because the case remains pending before the courts, the bureau said it could not discuss details of the litigation but stressed it remains engaged in the legal process.
