He added that his message was driven by solidarity with affected communities facing both conflict and disease.

The Director-General of the World Health Organisation (WHO), Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, has made a strong appeal for a temporary ceasefire in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), urging armed groups to halt hostilities and allow Ebola response teams safe access to affected communities in Ituri province.

In a personal message addressed to the people of the DRC on Thursday, May 28, 2026, particularly those in Ituri, Tedros stressed that his intervention was not only in an official capacity but also as someone with deep personal connection to the region.

“My name is Tedros, and I am the Director-General of the World Health Organisation. But today, I am not writing to you as an official. I am writing to you as someone who knows your region, who has walked your streets, and who cares deeply about what happens to you and your families.”

He added that his message was driven by solidarity with affected communities facing both conflict and disease.
