In a shocking incident, a car reportedly driven by a drunk driver claimed the lives of two women construction workers near Sayalkudi in Ramanathapuram district on Thursday.Police said that the car, driven by Illavarasan, 41, of Abiramam in a rash and negligent manner, while crossing the Sayalkudi-Aruppukottai Road, hit two construction workers working at a building site. In the impact, the two women identified as Panchavarnam, 45, wife of Vellaichami and Jayamani, 55, wife of Gnanadas died on the spot after they suffered head injuries.The car, it is said, halted at a distance of about 200 metres and the driver was in an unconscious state. Passers by rushed and checked and found that he was injured. He was rushed to the Sayalkudi Government Hospital and the two bodies of the women workers were sent to the GH for post-mortem.However, after a few hours, the injured person Illavarasan, allegedly gave a slip and escaped from the hospital. Sayalkudi police have registered a case and are on the look out for the car driver Illavarasan. Traffic on the stretch was affected for an hour after the incident.
