With the State government ordering infrastructure improvements at Amma Canteens, the Corporation has proposed renovation works at two canteens and procurement of cooking equipment to ensure quality food for the public. There are 11 Amma Canteens in the city, which were opened during the AIADMK regime in February 2013. While an idli is sold at ₹1, sambar rice and curd rice are priced at ₹5 each. Following Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay’s directions to revamp Amma Canteens across the State, funds are to be allocated from the general funds of Corporations. As per the government order issued on May 18, 2026, the civic body has identified two canteens for complete renovation. The Amma Canteen on Poondurai Road in Zone 4 is visited by hundreds of people every day. Constructed 13 years ago, the building is in a damaged condition. The wall tiles and flooring have deteriorated and require replacement. Due to damage to underground pipelines, wastewater from the kitchen does not drain properly, causing inconvenience to workers. The RO plant is also non-functional and requires repairs. Utensils, buckets, tumblers, plastic stools and the refrigerator have also been damaged. Officials said renovation works and replacement of utensils had been proposed at an estimated cost of ₹10 lakh.Similarly, the Amma Canteen at Marapalam in Ward 43 requires renovation. Broken tiles and the low height of the compound wall, which allows entry of anti-social elements during night hours, are among the concerns. The RO plant is completely damaged, while utensils and serving materials are also in poor condition. Renovation works, replacement of utensils and installation of new water tanks have been proposed at an estimated cost of ₹6.70 lakh.A senior Corporation engineer told The Hindu that resolutions for the works were passed at the council meeting held on Tuesday (May 26, 2026) and tenders for execution of the works would be floated shortly.
