Following instruction from Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay on renovating the ‘Amma Unavagams’ across Tamil Nadu to serve quality food to the poor at heavily subsidised cost, the Corporation council meeting held here on Wednesday resolved to renovate these eateries in this coastal town at the cost of ₹46.60 lakh.Mayor Jegan Periyasamy, while addressing in the council meeting, said the urban civic body was running 5 ‘Amma Unavagam’ for feeding the poor with dishes being sold at heavily subsidised cost. Since the buildings housing these canteens and the cooking vessels had damaged, ₹46.60 lakh would be spent for giving facelift to the ‘Amma Unavagam’ and for purchasing new vessels and other kitchen gadgets. The Mayor appealed to the residents not to waste the drinking water being supplied by the Corporation for watering the plants in the homestead garden and washing the vehicles.“Of the 60 wards in Thoothukudi Corporation, residents of 35 wards are getting water everyday while 17 wards are getting drinking water supply on alternate days. This achievement has been possible due to the meticulous planning and augmentation of drinking water supply from the Tamirabharani. There is no complaint of erratic and insufficient drinking water supply from any part of Thoothukudi. Hence, the residents should cooperate with the Corporation in conserving water by not using the drinking water for other domestic purposes, washing the vehicles and watering the plants,” Mr. Jegan appealed. The Mayor also said that Puckle Channel expansion to avert flooding during monsoon, renovation of parks, greenery initiatives etc. would continue.Today’s council meeting resolved to remove all 15 shops on the western side of the central administrative office near old bus-stand to create more space for the visitors and outsourcing of the cleaning operations in the Corporation marriage halls.Commissioner C.
