Arrests have been made after food parcels intended for vulnerable households were allegedly found being sold at a tuckshop in Magaliesburg, raising concerns over the protection and integrity of social development relief programmes.
The incident on 26 May 2026 prompted police intervention after residents alerted authorities that groceries on sale at a Vuyani Street tuckshop were linked to government-issued food parcels meant for beneficiaries of the Department of Social Development.
According to the South African Police Service (SAPS), officers responded to reports of community unrest and suspected possession of stolen goods. When they arrived, a crowd had gathered outside the premises.
The tuckshop was later opened in the presence of police, where the items were allegedly identified by a local ward councillor as state-issued food parcels intended for beneficiaries.
It has been confirmed that several suspects have since been arrested, and a criminal case has been opened at Magaliesburg Police Station.
