The maximum amount that energy companies can charge per unit will go up by 13% in July to reflect the increasing costs of fuel, especially gas, due to the ongoing conflict between the US, Israel and Iran.
A typical household would see bills rise by £221 a year, but homes on fixed tariffs are not affected.
The government has said it will consider more targeted help for some households later in the year when more energy is used due to colder weather.
