OTTAWA—Former environment minister Steven Guilbeault said his lifelong pursuit to address climate change would continue, but it wouldn’t happen inside the Carney government as he announced plans to resign his Montreal seat.

Guilbeault confirmed widely reported rumours with a social media post Wednesday, saying he would be resigning this summer. In a speech in the House of Commons later in the day, Guilbeault said he had been working on climate change since he was 20 years old, recounting attending the first United Nations Climate Conference in Berlin and sleeping on a gym floor with 600 other activists.
