The Education Rights Campaign (ERC) has accused President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the Nigerian political elite of abandoning children to terrorists while focusing on political calculations ahead of the 2027 general elections.

In a Children’s Day statement issued on Wednesday, May 27, 2026, the group described the situation facing many Nigerian children as “gory,” particularly for schoolchildren and teachers kidnapped by armed groups and held in captivity.

The ERC cited the May 15, 2026 attack on a high school and two primary schools in Ahoro-Esinele community in Oriire Local Government Area near Ogbomoso, Oyo State, where terrorists reportedly abducted 39 students and seven teachers.

The group recalled how one of the abducted teachers, Mr Michael Oyedokun, was beheaded by the terrorists, while another teacher was killed during the assault.
