Tamilselvi, 35, hails from Palkarai village near Ramanathapuram. She had nasal polyps (flesh growth in the nose) which caused nasal congestion. For this, she was admitted to the Ramanathapuram Government Medical College Hospital for treatment on May 21. Following this, doctors performed a surgery on the patient’s nose. During the procedure, her health suddenly deteriorated.Consequently, she was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and was being treated while on ventilator support. In this situation, doctors recommended that she be immediately taken to the Madurai Government Rajaji Hospital for advanced treatment.Stating that the hospital administration was referring her to another hospital at a very critical stage after treating her for a week, and alleging that Ms. Tamilselvi was in a critical condition solely due to the doctors’ wrong treatment, more than 50 family members and relatives staged a road blockade on the Rameswaram Road near the Ramanathapuram Government Hospital.Police officials and Tahsildar Kaleeswaran, among others, held talks with them. As, the talks failed, the blockade continued for more than half an hour resulting in a traffic jam.Following this, the police physically lifted the protestors and put them into a police van. In connection with this, 20 people, including 16 women, were arrested and detained in a nearby marriage hall.Regarding this, Government Medical College Dean Amudharani said: “Doctors performed surgery for the flesh growth in the nose. At that time, she experienced chest palpitations. For that, she was treated with ventilation support. Currently, there is an improvement in her health condition and she is doing well.
