A seemingly harmless physical trait like ear hair may actually reveal more than most people think. A recent post on X by Dr. Priyam Bordoloi sparked widespread curiosity after discussing whether premature ear hair growth in younger men could be linked to underlying health risks — particularly heart-related conditions. As per Dr. Priyam Bordoloi, a 45-year-old male patient saw noticeable ear hair while his older brother did not. While many people associate ear hair with aging, Dr Bordoloi said its appearance at a relatively younger age may sometimes point toward something deeper than genetics alone."When a relatively young man develops prominent ear (auricular) hair early, one organ system worth thinking about is the cardiovascular system," Dr Bordoloi wrote. Citing studies, he said that excessive ear hair and especially the diagonal earlobe crease (Frank’s sign) with androgen sensitivity, metabolic syndrome, and possible increased cardiovascular risk.— DocPriyamMD (@DocPriyamMD) "It is not a diagnostic sign of heart disease, and many perfectly healthy men have ear hair. But in a younger patient, it can be a small clinical clue that should make us think about Hypertension, Dyslipidaemia, Insulin resistance/diabetes, Smoking history, and Premature coronary artery disease risk," he added.Commenting on the post, a person who is pursuing his medical education wrote, "Research often links excessive ear canal hair in men (hypertrichosis lanuginosa terminalis) to an increased risk of coronary artery disease. If he also has a diagonal crease in the lobe (Frank’s Sign), the correlation is even stronger. His older brother might simply have a different cardiovascular profile.""The endocrine system should be evaluated. In males, this can be a marker of exaggerated androgen sensitivity, hormone-secreting tumors, or metabolic conditions," replied another doctor.Another asked, "Are you ruling out any role of genetics? Also, from what age would you consider it normal or safe with respect to cardiovascular risk. Seen many guys in their 50s with ear hair. Should all of them be undergoing cardio evaluation."
Doctor reveals surprising link between ear hair and heart health
Ear hair in younger men could signal heart risks. Dr. Priyam Bordoloi noted this connection, citing studies. Excessive ear hair, especially with a diagonal earlobe crease, may indicate issues like hypertension and diabetes. While not a definitive diagnosis, it serves as a clinical clue for doctors. Medical professionals are exploring genetic and endocrine factors.
