As social media fuels dangerous beauty trends, young men are increasingly seeking to achieve cauliflower ear, a deformity typically treated by medical professionals. Experts warn that this trend could have lasting consequences for physical health and personal identity.

In the world of combat sports, ears are often the unsung casualties of the ring. Ask any ringside doctor how they respond when a fighter’s ear balloons between rounds, and the answer is clear: drain it before the damage sets in. Yet, in a troubling trend, this medical logic is now being inverted. A deformity that surgeons work tirelessly to prevent is becoming an aesthetic goal for some men, with many resorting to dangerous methods to achieve the look of cauliflower ear.

Professor Chrysis Sofianos, a triple board-certified plastic surgeon and academic head of the Division of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at Wits University, has issued a stark warning about the outcomes of untreated cauliflower ear. "If left unaddressed, it can harden into a fixed lump of scarred tissue and cartilage, leading to serious impairments, increased susceptibility to infections, chronic pain, tenderness, and, in severe cases, hearing loss," he says. Once the cartilage has permanently deformed, corrective surgery is often necessary, but it comes with limitations in restoring the ear to its original shape.
