“The question is not whether AI will shape the world,” former Google/Alphabet CEO Eric Schmidt told University of Arizona graduates earlier this month. “The question is whether you will have shaped artificial intelligence.” His remarks—like those of other speakers who mentioned AI in their commencement addresses this graduation season—were met with a chorus of boos. This should not have been surprising: from environmentally destructive data centers to mass layoffs, intellectual-property theft, and the generation of sexualized images of women and children, the costs of AI seem to many, especially young people, to outweigh the benefits.
