Residents were left cut off and in the dark - literally - after Wellington Electricity closed vehicle access to multiple streets.

Wellington Deputy Mayor Ben McNulty said the handling of the closure of Barrie Street in Johnsonville on Tuesday, which effectively cut off two other residential roads, was “completely unacceptable”.

Posting on social media, McNulty said residents were notified about the need to replace a power pole in Barrie Street in advance on Tuesday’s day-long work.

“What wasn't communicated was their unilateral decision to shut down access to the street which also stopped residents in Sheridan Terrace and Creswell Place from being able to access their homes for hours on end,” he wrote.

McNulty said residents with disabilities were faced with the option of spending the day in their car or “hobbling home several hundred metres down an incredibly steep stretch of road”.
