Popeyes launched at-home biscuit mixes at major grocery retailers nationwide, giving customers a way to make a version of the chain's biscuits at home for the first time.

The mixes are available in two varieties: Homestyle and Cajun Cheddar. Both require only water and butter to prepare, with the Cajun Cheddar calling for the addition of cheese. Each box makes 10 biscuits and is priced between $3.23 and $3.49, depending on the retailer, the company said. The mixes are sold at Walmart $WMT -1.67%, Target $TGT -0.94%, Kroger, and HEB.

Unlike the compact, shaped biscuits found at Popeyes locations, the grocery store versions are drop biscuits, a style in which wet dough is spooned directly onto a baking sheet, according to The Daily Meal.

Testing both mixes for Tasting Table, a reviewer described the Homestyle biscuit's interior as light and fluffy with a flavor that tracked closely to the restaurant version, while noting that the tops remained pale regardless of baking time. The Cajun Cheddar fared less well in the evaluation — once the accompanying Cajun butter was brushed over the finished biscuits, any distinct cheese flavor effectively disappeared. To improve the result, the reviewer recommended increasing the amount of cheddar in the mix and running the biscuits briefly under a broiler toward the end of baking.
