The Communist Party of India (CPI) State secretary G. Eswaraiah has called for large-scale protests by farmers in front of district collectorates across Andhra Pradesh on June 1, alleging that the State government has failed to make adequate preparations for the kharif season.Addressing a press conference organised by the Andhra Pradesh Rythu Sangham here on Tuesday, Mr. Eswaraiah said the government had not announced any concrete plans relating to cultivation, seed distribution or crop loans even as the Kharif season was set to commence on June 1.He alleged that irrigation infrastructure across the State was in poor condition, with canals remaining unsilted, sluice gates rusting and several lift irrigation schemes lying defunct. He demanded that crop and green manure seeds be supplied to farmers and tenant farmers with a 90% subsidy and urged the government to check the rising prices of seeds and fertilisers.Mr. Eswaraiah also sought timely supply of urea, strict action against fertiliser black-marketing and reduction in fuel prices for agricultural operations. He demanded collateral-free crop loans up to ₹5 lakh and waiver of crop loans up to ₹2 lakh. The CPI leader further urged the government to ensure remunerative prices for tobacco farmers and provide compensation to the families of farmers who allegedly died by suicide due to mounting debts.Andhra Pradesh Tenant Farmers Association State general secretary P. Jamalaiah demanded immediate issuance of identity cards to tenant farmers, while CPI leader Dega Prabhakar called for reduction in aqua feed prices and subsidised power supply to aquaculture farmers.
