The Communist Party of India (CPI) on Tuesday accused the Andhra Pradesh government of resorting to “diversion politics” to deflect attention from governance issues and alleged that democratic rights were under attack through the misuse of stringent laws, including the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA).Addressing a press conference here, CPI State Secretary G. Eswaraiah said the party’s State Secretariat had adopted a resolution expressing concern over the political situation in Andhra Pradesh. Instead of addressing issues such as drought, low prices for agricultural and aquaculture produce, and law and order, the government was targeting individuals and organisations critical of its policies, he alleged.Mr. Eswaraiah criticised the invocation of the UAPA against activist Prashna Ravan, alleging that the law was being used to suppress dissent rather than combat terrorism. He claimed that the Act was invoked only after the accused secured bail and described its use as unprecedented in the State. He also objected to criticism of retired IPS officer A. B. Venkateswara Rao for questioning the applicability of the UAPA in the case.The CPI leader announced that the party would organise public meetings, seminars and discussions across several districts to protest against the alleged misuse of the law. He further alleged that the State government was acting in line with the BJP’s political agenda and accused it of selectively targeting social media users critical of the ruling alliance while sparing its supporters.Mr. Eswaraiah said the CPI would organise “Marpu Kosam” padayatras across the State from August 6 to 15, followed by protest programmes from August 17 to 27. The party would also participate in a national rally in New Delhi on September 1.CPI National Executive member Akkineni Vanaja demanded immediate implementation of 33% reservation for women in Parliament and the State Legislatures.
