Just the thought of a jazz bar conjures up an image. Dim lights. A band deep in improvisation. Glassware clinking beneath the hum of conversation as bartenders shake, stir, and pour through the night. Somewhere in the room, the sharp woody scent of cigars lingers while the sounds of the saxophone and percussion move through the space.Jazz culture in India has long histories in cities like Mumbai, Kolkata, and Delhi. In Chennai, however, the scene has often existed in fragments, in hotel lounges, intimate performances, independent music circuits, and one-night-only sets. The city has had jazz musicians and listeners for years, but rarely a space designed entirely around that identity. That changes, or at least begins to, with Triniti at The Residency Towers Chennai. Replacing the former Bike and Barrel, the two-floor space has been reimagined as a contemporary jazz lounge, complete with live performances, a dedicated cigar room, and a menu that draws inspiration from the city itself. The ground floor centres around a small stage where musicians perform just steps away from guests, while the upper level shifts into coupes, intimate tables, and private dining spaces. “The bar is called Triniti because it represents the coming together of three things: drinks, ambience, and music. We wanted to create a place for people who like to take things slow, have conversations, and spend time with family and friends,” says R Manoj Prabhakaran, Executive Sous Chef, The Residency Towers Chennai. While the live performances bring undeniable energy, the volume occasionally overwhelms the space and easy-going vibe of a jazz bar, making conversation difficult even within the cigar lounge, which is a small but noticeable contradiction in a venue designed for lingering evenings. The evening began with cocktails that drew deeply from Chennai’s flavours and cultural references. Across the menu, local ingredients like nannari, tamarind, jasmine, turmeric, banana, and betel leaf found their way into drinks. We started with the Golden Weave, inspired by Kanchipuram’s weaving traditions. Made with turmeric and passion fruit gin, tea syrup, and black lime , the cocktail was smooth and layered. Clarinet, made with galangal gin blended with nannari, banana, matcha, and oxidised wine made for a drink that was both playful and complex. A couple of whiskey and brandy-forward cocktails also made their way to the table, like Between Colombus and Geroge Town, both of which were strong, heady pours and must be sipped with caution.Food follows the same philosophy of keeping flavours local. We began with button idli, a familiar bar snack across the city, dusted with peanut podi and served alongside coconut chutney. The asparagus masala vada, also paired with chutney, reworked the everyday masala vada found everywhere from beaches to railway platforms. Neither dish strayed too far from the familiar, though the menu clearly attempts to do so. We also try the moong dal in philo sheets, which attempts to emulate Besant Nagar beach sundal, but is dry and underseasoned. The toddy shack wings stood out for their tenderness, the result of being soaked in fermented toddy before being char-grilled and paired with a sharp, punchy inji-puli glaze, and the Malabar fish and turmeric leaf croquettes were herby, and lightly citrusy. They paired well with the vodka-forward Crimson, made with traditional red rice infused vodka, miso and red grape. The menu also has dishes like curry leaf and parmesan poppers, sea crab tartlets, barbecue pork cubes, and braised mutton folded into flaky parathas. The food is standard, but is designed to be shared slowly over drinks and long conversations, even if the music demands diners to speak a little louder than intended. Triniti is at The Residency Hotel, 49, Gopathy Narayana Rd, Lakshimi Colony, T Nagar. A meal for two without alcohol costs ₹2,500. For reservations, call 9344912033.
