Fans of the detective series will be thrilled as it returns to the BBC09:48, 26 May 2026Updated 09:49, 26 May 2026This Morning: Bergerac cast discuss rebootA hit detective series described by fans as a "masterpiece" and "better than the original" is returning to the BBC.‌Bergerac was a police drama series set in Jersey, starring John Nettles as the original DS Jim Bergerac. The series ran from 1981 to 1991.‌The series returned in 2025 on UKTV as a reboot, starring Damien Molony. The reboot also stars Zoë Wanamaker, Robert Gilbert, Chloé Sweetlove, and Pippa Haywood.‌The first two series of the Bergerac reboot are currently streaming on U&Drama, but now, for the first time in 35 years, Bergerac is returning to the BBC.During an appearance on The One Show, Damien confirmed to Alex Jones that the series would return to the BBC in the summer.Alex said, "Damien, of course, you're no stranger to playing a TV detective, you have been on here talking about Bergerac, which, by the way, is coming to BBC One this summer, isn't it?"‌"This is news to me," Damien replied before adding, "But it is wonderful news."Alex stated, "Well, series one has been confirmed," as Damien said, "I am thrilled it is coming to the BBC."‌The Daily Mirror has reached out to the BBC for comment. The first series of the reboot received mixed reviews from fans on both Reddit and IMDb, earning 6.6 stars. While some fans thought the reboot was "better than the original", others weren't as impressed. One fan said on IMDb, "I have fond memories of the original with the gorgeous John Nettles (before he moved to Midsomer), so there is always a bit of anxiety regarding a remake.‌"However, this Bergerac, with the mesmerising Damien Moloney, is a different deal altogether. The general feel is much darker and less of a glossy travelogue for Jersey."Making Charlie into mother-in-law instead of father-in-law also works well and gives an interesting layered relationship."Philip Glenister is, as always, terrific. He exudes menace in a solid performance, showing the dark side of the super-rich and the corruption they take for granted. (Then again, I have never seen a bad performance from him!)."‌"Have just binged this and can't wait for the next season," they added.Someone else commented, "It's good to see Damien Maloney in a lead role. I enjoyed the series - better than the original series. I look forward to the development of all the characters, including the location, and its role in keeping the rich rich. Great casting and nice filming - very good to see Zoe Wanamaker have a meaty role in the series - better than the awful cigar-smoking Charlie in the original series.‌"I look forward to a second series and some risks taken that deviate even more from the original Bergerac. I like that this male lead is vulnerable, fragile, and trying to keep it all together - the flawed character works."One shared their mixed feelings on Reddit, "I'm enjoying it. I think it's a decent programme, though hand on heart I don't think it's particularly 'Bergerac' and I can't for the life of me think why they ditched the original theme tune, that was so disappointing to me."Another agreed, "I can't for the life of me think why they ditched the original theme tune."Article continues belowBergerac is coming to the BBC this summer and is available to watch on U&Drama.
