From dog ears to DNA storage, Premier Doug Ford’s new omnibus bill is taking aim at a slew of “safety measures” that include a crackdown on organized shoplifting rings.

A plan to combat “criminal networks” that swarm retailers — leading to $9 billion in losses across Canada in 2024 — is part of the “Protecting Ontario’s Streets and Communities Act” which also proposes four new canine drug patrol teams in provincial jails; holding DNA from coroner investigations for 50 years and the prohibition of “medically unnecessary” pet procedures such as declawing cats or cropping dogs’ ears.
