Now you don’t see me

Novy Undercover hob/worktop

Price: from £4,199

The Novy Undercover looks like a kitchen worktop because it is, indeed, a kitchen worktop. But it’s also a hob. It may look as if someone’s just moving pans about for their own amusement but, be reassured, they’re actually cooking. It’s made possible by a material called Dekton, developed by the Spanish firm Cosentino, which consists of minerals ultra-compressed into a surface that’s both heat- and scratch-resistant. So you can chop on it, cook on it and, if you’re me, leave detritus lying around on it.

Belgian kitchen firm Novy is one of the first to have used Dekton to produce a hob that could be termed “invisible”, complete with features you’d find on a traditional glass induction hob. Up close, you can see silver markers indicating the centre of each cooking zone (you can opt for three or four), small indicator lights at the edge of the surface that correspond to each of those zones (they glow either white or red) and an almost invisible power button. That’s it.
