A source familiar with the proceedings told SaharaReporters that the case moved forward significantly during Friday’s sitting after months of controversy, repeated adjournments and allegations of political interference.

The prolonged trial involving former domestic workers of Nigeria’s ex-First Lady, Patience Jonathan, resumed last Friday, with five of the defendants concluding their defence before the matter was adjourned to June 15, 2026, for continuation of the hearing.

A source familiar with the proceedings told SaharaReporters that the case moved forward significantly during Friday’s sitting after months of controversy, repeated adjournments and allegations of political interference.

“On Friday, they went to court. The case really proceeded well. Five persons have finished with their defence and the next court date is June 15 for other persons to finish their defence,” the source said.

The development marks a new phase in the controversial case, which has kept 14 former domestic workers in detention since 2019 over allegations of stealing jewellery belonging to the former First Lady.
