MANILA, Philippines—The Philippine National Police (PNP) has pledged to protect the families of the missing sabungeros, or cockfighting enthusiasts, amid allegations that they are being pressured to withdraw from court proceedings.
In a statement on Sunday, PNP Chief Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. said the police will not disregard claims that some relatives were allegedly urged to skip court hearings.
He said that any form of coercion, intimidation, or bribery will be thoroughly investigated.
“Police assistance does not end with case build-up and filing of charges. It extends to ensuring that no mockery of the justice system takes place during the legal process,” he added.
