Posters put up by DMK cadres opposing a resolution passed by Manithaneya Makkal Katchi (MMK) to contest future elections on its own symbol created a flutter in Nagapattinam on Saturday. In the 2026 Assembly election, MMK president M.H. Jawahirullah contested from Nagapattinam Assembly constituency as a candidate of the DMK-led alliance on the Rising Sun symbol and won. At the recent general council meeting of the MMK, a resolution was adopted stating that the party would contest the forthcoming elections in Tamil Nadu on its own symbol.Opposing the move, DMK functionaries in Nagapattinam pasted posters across the town including in the bus stand area and Nagore. The posters, issued in the name of a DMK functionary, said that while the party welcomed Mr. Jawahirullah’s decision to contest on a separate symbol, he should first resign from the MLA post won on the Rising Sun symbol and then seek a fresh mandate from the same constituency on his party’s symbol.
