Manithaneya Makkal Katchi (MMK) general secretary P. Abdul Samad on Friday (May 22, 2026) said the party will only contest on its own symbol in future Parliamentary, Assembly, and local body elections in Tamil Nadu. The decision was part of resolutions passed by the party's high-level committee after the 2026 election results, which returned a fractured mandate in the State Assembly. The MMK was allotted two seats by the DMK – Manapparai and Nagappatinam – and it contested both on the DMK’s ‘Rising Sun’ symbol. This prevented the party from exploring any post-poll alliance, as it is bound by the DMK whip's direction. While thanking the DMK and its leaders for the support during the elections, the party also congratulated TVK founder and Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay for taking charge of the new government. The party urged the government to “formulate and implement plans to take Tamil Nadu on a path of development, continue the welfare schemes implemented by the previous DMK government, and uphold and protect all human rights, including the rights of minority communities.” Published - May 22, 2026 11:19 am IST
