Congress members on Sunday staged a protest in Sirkazhi condemning DMK leader Udhayanidhi Stalin and burnt copies of a resolution passed at a recent DMK youth wing meeting criticising the party. The incident led to a tense situation after DMK cadres gathered at the venue and engaged in a verbal altercation.According to police, the protest was organised by the SC/ST wing of the Congress in response to a resolution adopted at the DMK youth wing meeting in Chennai, which alleged that the Congress had benefited electorally from the DMK-led alliance in successive elections but had “betrayed” the party by shifting political alignments. The resolution had also accused the Congress of lacking gratitude despite securing Assembly and Rajya Sabha representation with the support of the DMK alliance. The protest was led by Mayiladuthurai district SC/ST wing president Killivalavan. The protesters raised slogans against the DMK and Mr. Udhayanidhi Stalin before burning copies of the resolution.Tension prevailed after DMK functionaries from Sirkazhi town and union units reached the protest site and questioned the Congress cadres for criticising the DMK after benefiting from the alliance’s electoral support.A heated argument ensued between the two groups. Police personnel from Sirkazhi police station intervened and dispersed the DMK cadres, preventing any untoward incident. Published - May 24, 2026 05:38 pm IST
