Review: After the consents, logistics, and a few hiccups with supply, often the biggest challenge on Grand Designs NZ is drumming up enough drama to make for great TV. Most Kiwis have their heads screwed on tight when it comes to building, and a delay isn’t going to throw them.
That goes doubly for professionals Mark and Lisa Darrow, who are building their dream home and “final project” in Omaha Beach, north of Auckland.
In all of Grand Designs history, you’ll be hard pressed to find a cooler customer than Mark.
Over the course of the show, this affable chap barely breaks a sweat. Lisa, too, comes across as a pillar of quiet trust and calm. They’re a bloody good team, and it shows.
They’ve taken more than a few chances with this project. They’ve picked one of the most expensive stretches of beach in the country, where sections are rare as tūī teeth and the neighbourhood has a distinctive Billionaire’s Playground vibe.
