Equipped with smart classrooms and modern sports facilities to serve 1,000 students, the GOS-General Cariappa Higher Secondary School got a new lease of life with the inauguration of new buildings here on Saturday.Named after the first Commander-in-Chief of the Indian Army, Field Marshal K.M. Cariappa, the revamped buildings were inaugurated by his son and Air Marshal (Retd.) K.C. Cariappa as a fitting tribute. The school, founded in 1956, was inaugurated by former President Rajendra Prasad and has been one of the earliest initiatives of the Guild of Service. The institution has been instrumental in educating students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds.Sprawling over 45,350 sq. ft., the new buildings will be equipped with smart classrooms, modern science labs, advanced teaching aids, computer centre, and a 200-seater dining hall.Air Marshal Cariappa said, “My father would go out of his way to do anything for those in the armed forces and children.”Arvind P. Datar, senior advocate, noted that few institutions can boast the legacy this school has. “Whatever may be the development of technology, two aspects are indispensable to educational institutions — infrastructure and teachers.”K.S. Sripathi, chairperson, Guild of Service (C), said the school was almost in a shambles, but now the infrastructure and ambience have been significantly upgraded.Binoy Joseph, vice-chairperson, Guild of Service (C), said: “This marks the beginning of new goals of opportunity, learning, hope, and future possibilities,” he said.
