Piraeus Port Authority (OLP) is expanding into tourism. Its plan, which aims to capture a share of the hospitality market – mainly of foreign travelers who come to the capital to board cruise ships – is expected to be completed by 2029.
By the end of the year, two of the large multistory buildings at the center of the port that were old warehouses are expected to be leased. Indicating the potential such a move can have is the development of Piraeus as a cruise hub in the Eastern Mediterranean: The percentage of ships that use Piraeus exclusively as a homeport is now approaching 80% of all arrivals.
The picture is also reflected in official statistics: In 2025, cruise passenger traffic in Piraeus reached 1.85 million passengers, setting a new record, while the number of cruise ships exceeded 860. Similar figures are expected for this year.
The management of the listed company is promoting the utilization of old, multistory warehouses that remain unused in the central port. The plans of the main OLP shareholder, Cosco Shipping, for the development of hotels are not new, but were delayed by the pandemic. Now they are being accelerated by the development of tourism in Greater Athens and throughout the country.
