The centre reviewed Gulf-bound container movements and announced measures to ease bottlenecks Friday. An official statement said West Asia bound containers have also been rerouted to Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA), placing additional pressure on port and logistics infrastructure.Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal, and Ports, Shipping, and Waterways Minister Sarbananda Sonowal reviewed the situation with the All India Liquid Bulk Importers and Exporters Association. The shipping ministry also announced a series of operational interventions to relive terminals and expedite cargo evacuation, the statement said.“We are taking coordinated and proactive measures across ports and logistics systems to sustain Ease of Doing Business (EODB),” Sonowal said.In a post on X, Goyal said the ministers directly engaged with India's exporters, importers and port authorities.Operations at JNPA were hit this month due to a lorry driver shortage.Stranded containers were evacuated through rail movement even to nearby Container Freight Stations (CFSs) equipped with railway sidings, while simultaneous scanning of double containers was introduced to reduce processing time, the statement added.Intern-Terminal Railway Handling Operation (ITRHO) charges and Change of Mode of Transport charges have also been waived.“Port terminals extended waivers and discounts on ground rent charges on a case-to-case basis. Dedicated green channels for empty trailers were established across terminals to facilitate faster turnaround,” the statement said, adding these measures are expected to provide relief to trade stakeholders.Container Freight Station (CFS) operators and transporters have been directed by the centre to increase driver availability, enhance cargo evacuation through railways, and engage with motor driving training schools to build a larger pool of trained trailer drivers.
