Members of the European Parliament adopted a resolution expressing solidarity with the people of Iran. Referring to the widespread crackdown on Iranian protesters in January, the statement said Iranians had faced “the largest mass killing of protesters” in their country’s history.
The signatories also voiced deep regret over the secret executions of dissidents in March and April, including minors, and urged the authorities of the Islamic Republic to immediately release all political prisoners.
At the same time, the European Parliament called on the European Union to expand sanctions against Iranian officials responsible for the crackdowns, including the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and institutions linked to the Supreme Leader of the Islamic Republic.
The representatives said members of the IRGC, as well as family members loyal to them, must also be barred from entering the European Union. The resolution was adopted with 516 votes in favor, 14 against, and 39 abstentions.
