Europe knows how to govern space, but it still has not worked out how to belong there

If there is anywhere European identity should be able to outrun nationalism, it is in outer space.

Sure, a European astronaut might not be laying claim to parts of the moon anytime soon, which is technically illegal anyway under the terms of the UN’s 1967 Outer Space Treaty. But the likes of China and the US are already making moves to do so.

This focuses attention on how capitals should represent themselves in immediate orbit, and on any future journeys deep into the cosmos.
