Greek cheeses dominated TasteAtlas’ latest global rankings, with Graviera Naxou sharing the top spot for the world’s best hard cheese alongside Italy’s Parmigiano Reggiano.
The semi-hard cheese from the Cycladic island of Naxos received a score of 4.6, while other Greek varieties also placed in the top 10, including Graviera Kritis, Kefalograviera and Metsovone. Additional Greek cheeses in the top 50 included San Michali from Syros, Ladotyri Mytilinis, Graviera Agrafon and Kefalotyri.
TasteAtlas described Graviera Naxou as a century-old cheese traditionally made from cow’s milk or blends with sheep and goat milk. The platform highlighted its mild flavor and ties to local livestock raised on native herbs.
The distinction comes as the Union of Agricultural Cooperatives of Naxos reported stable dairy production despite climate pressures, rising costs and water shortages. Graviera Naxou is currently exported to 18 countries. Producers plan to expand exports to 20 countries beginning early next year.
