They screamed "oh my God" as they became the first duo to make it to the finish line at Lake Khövsgöl in northern Mongolia.‌"I can't put it into words!" said Kush. "We've done it!"‌"It's hard to get my head around it," Jo admitted. "First win for Liverpool!"Five teams had started out in the latest series of the BBC show, which sees contestants racing across huge distances with no phones or bank cards and just the same amount of money as the plane fare would have been.Jo and Kush, cousins Puja and Roshni, siblings Katie and Harrison, father and daughter Molly and Andrew and in-laws Mark and Margo were tasked with making their way from Europe "to the uncharted edges of Mongolia" in what the BBC said would be "the toughest journey yet".‌Andrew and Molly came second in the race, with Katie and Harrison behind them. Mark and Margo came in last, more than a day later, and were emotional as they called out a thank you to Julia, Mark's late wife and Margo's sister, whose last wish had been that the in laws became friends. They set off from the sun-soaked streets of Palermo and had to travel more than 11,000km across Europe and Asia. Their route carved through countries including Italy, Greece, Türkiye, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan before finishing on the shores of Lake Khövsgöl, in northern Mongolia.‌In the most extreme race to date, conditions changed from 30 degree Mediterranean heat to subarctic temperatures of –20°C, which the teams had to navigate on less than £26 per person per day.The competitors all faced various bumps into the road during the gruelling journey. Katie and Harrison were early leaders, managing to make it to checkpoints hours ahead of the rest of the pack, but they didn't manage to hold onto their lead. Meanwhile, cousins Puja and Roshni were eliminated early on after finishing last in one leg, leaving the other four competing for the £20,000 prize.‌In the final leg, the remaining hopefuls had to race a distance of 950km to get to the finish line in Hatgal. The last leg was an emotional one for Andrew and Molly, who was tearful after they discovered that they had taken a wrong turn that could put them out of the running. And Margo and Mark - who were racing together in a bid to become friends after the loss of Mark's wife and Margo's sister Julia - ran into money troubles, with their budget was dwindling fast.Article continues belowRace Across the World first aired in 2019 and has now broadcast six series, along with a celebrity spin-off edition.Race Across the World is available on BBC iPlayer and BBC One.
