The result of Martina Šimkovičová’s trip has been questioned, along with its reported €10,000 cost.
Culture Minister Martina Šimkovičová, a nominee of the far-right Slovak National Party, has drawn criticism after promoting her visit to the Cannes Film Festival while omitting some of the Slovak film industry’s main successes at the event.
Šimkovičová attended the festival’s film market, Marché du Film, over the weekend and briefly visited the Czech-Slovak pavilion. She also took part in an informal lunch with European culture ministers, where discussions focused on artificial intelligence and European cinema.
However, according to Denník N, she did not sign a joint declaration agreed upon by other ministers. The Culture Ministry has not explained why.
The minister said on social media that Slovakia could show the world “the talent, creativity and professionalism of Slovak creators”. She also referred to the country’s ambition to become a top global filming location.
