Metro-backed retailer joins a growing trend, where shoppers can enter with an app and pay at self-checkouts after hours.

A grocery network operated by Metro Cash & Carry SR has opened its first hybrid 24-hour shop in Slovakia, joining a small but growing number of retailers testing staff-free stores.

The Môj obchod (“My Shop”) outlet in the village of Mlynky, between Poprad and Rožňava, operates with staff during part of the day and switches to a self-service system outside normal opening hours, according to Aktuality.sk.

According to Metro, the shop is staffed from 7:00 to 16:00 on weekdays and from 7:00 to 12:00 on Saturdays. Outside those hours, registered customers can enter the shop independently.

“Outside these hours, it functions in autonomous mode, allowing customers to shop conveniently in the evenings, at weekends and on public holidays,” Jana Hrubcová, a Metro spokesperson, told Aktuality.sk.
