Slovakia’s new payment rules have reached one of the capital’s busiest markets, though card terminals remain rare.

Miletičova Market in Bratislava has been hugely popular with locals for decades. You can buy just about anything there – from fruit and vegetables to clothes, flowers and alcohol.

The market, also known as Miletička, is famous for feeling as though time has stood still. And this applies not only to the appearance of the traders’ stalls, but also to the way people pay for goods.

To paraphrase a remark by a certain politician, Miletička has long been ruled by the “age of cash” – but that may now be changing.

Since the beginning of May, a new law on sales registration has come into force, requiring traders to allow customers to pay for purchases over one euro without cash – either by bank card or via internet banking after scanning a QR code.
