The “Topos & Demos” colloquium is underway on the island of Tinos, bringing together academics from Europe and North America to examine contemporary social and political challenges through the lens of local governance, participation and communication.
The event, titled “Place and Municipality,” is organized by the Department of Communication, Media and Culture and the Media and Journalism Research Laboratory at Panteion University, building on a preparatory meeting held last year.
Professor Emerita Marianna Psylla said Tinos was selected for its distinctive model of religious and cultural tourism and the willingness of local authorities to engage with new initiatives, framing the island as a case study in local-scale civic practice.
Participants from universities in France, Belgium and Canada are attending sessions conducted in English and French.
Organizers said the aim is to strengthen collaboration between academia, municipalities and communities, highlighting local participation as an alternative to urban-centered policymaking.
