Two imprisoned Iraqi nationals, identified as Ali Nader al-Obaidi (27 years old) and Fadel Sheikh Karim (29 years old), were executed at dawn on Monday, April 6, in Karaj Central Prison (Penitentiary). The two prisoners had been sentenced to death in a joint legal case on charges of “espionage.”

According to a report by Iran Human Rights (IHR NGO), both individuals were Arab citizens hailing from the Iraqi city of Amarah. They had previously been arrested in Karaj and prosecuted on charges of spying for the intelligence and security agencies of an Arab country.

Based on published information, prior to the issuance of their sentences, the prisoners were held and interrogated for approximately 11 months in a Ministry of Intelligence detention facility before being transferred to the IRGC Intelligence ward at Karaj’s Rajai Shahr Prison. Subsequently, their case was referred to the Karaj Central Penitentiary, where the death sentences were carried out.

An informed source told Iran Human Rights that these individuals were interrogated during prolonged security detentions under conditions in which they were denied access to a defense attorney of their choice and a fair trial.

Domestic media outlets and official sources of the Islamic Republic have not yet published any reports regarding the execution of these sentences.
