The 19th-century Klinčiareň building in Muránska Huta has reopened as a visitor and community centre.
The combined efforts of local residents, volunteers and European partners have rescued a crumbling historic building once used for nail production, transforming it into what could become a key stopping point for visitors en route to the Muránska Planina National Park.
A helping hand in the heart of Europe offers our travel guide to Slovakia.
Klinčiareň – literally, a factory where nails were made – is among the oldest buildings in the village of Muránska Huta, in central Slovakia. Constructed in the latter half of the 19th century, it later took on a succession of roles after nail and tool production ceased, serving at various times as a school, a shop and even a pub.
But as the years passed, the building slipped into disrepair. The village eventually acquired the property through donations and launched an ambitious restoration project, financed in part by a public fundraiser and European Union funding, according to the regional newspaper MY Novohrad.
