Left parties staged demonstrations in Nagercoil and Thoothukudi on Thursday, condemning the union government and demanding the roll back of hikes in fuel prices, which they said severely affects the poor and middle-class people. In Nagercoil, the protest was led by Padmanabhapuram CPI(M) MLA R. Chellaswamy.Speaking at the protest, Mr. Chellaswamy said that the increase in petrol, diesel and CNG prices announced by the oil marketing company is a ‘cruel attack’ by the Modi (referring to Prime Minister Narendra Modi) government on the daily lives of people.Stating that left parties strongly condemn the move, he pointed out that commercial LPG cylinders had already seen a steep hike from May 1. He added that the hike has pushed thousands of hotels towards closure and resulted in lakhs of workers losing their jobs.He further alleged that the Prime Minister had hinted at such a move earlier by advising people to use public transport and reduce fuel consumption, and claimed that the hike was not an independent decision of oil companies but was implemented with the approval of the union BJP government.CPI district secretary Subash Chandira Bose, former MLA Leema Rose, former MP A.V. Bellarmin and other members of CPI(M), CPI and CPI (ML) were present.A similar demonstration was also organised near Chidambara Nagar bus stand in Thoothukudi.CPI(M) district secretary K.P. Arumugam, CPI district secretary Karumban, CPI(M) Thoothukudi city secretary M.S. Muthu and other party members were present. Published - May 20, 2026 08:16 pm IST
