The lawyer further condemned the union leaders for what he described as their submissive attitude towards the government despite the worsening insecurity in the state and across the country.
Human rights lawyer, Inibehe Effiong, has lambasted the leadership of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) over its decision to embark on a three-day fasting and prayer programme instead of declaring industrial action or organising protests following the abduction of teachers, pupils and school administrators in Oyo State.
Effiong, reacting to the development on Wednesday, described the action of the union leadership as disgraceful, accusing them of making excuses for a government that has failed to protect lives and property.
SaharaReporters had reported that terrorists invaded schools in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State in the early hours of Friday, May 15, 2026, killing a teacher and a commuter while abducting several others, including a school principal, vice principal, teachers and dozens of pupils from Yawota Basic School, Yawota Community High School and Esinele Community High School.
Reacting to the response of the teachers’ union, Effiong wrote:“Instead of declaring a strike action or going on protest at a minimum over the kidnap of their colleagues, the clowns leading the Nigeria Union of Teachers in Oyo State are embarking on a 3-day fasting and prayers.”
