The University of Cambridge has developed an AI foundation model to track changes to land usage, a tool researchers are using to help preserve diminishing hedgehog populations.
The Tessera model (Temporal Embeddings of Surface Spectra for Earth Representation and Analysis) is based on a full year of Earth observation photos captured by the Sentinel-1 and Sentinel-2 satellites.
It has been trained in such a way that it can take on a variety of tasks, such as classifying land cover or identifying solar panels, with a minimum of additional work.
