One of the weirdest movies I watched last year was “Mickey 17.” I went into an early screening knowing almost nothing about it, and that turned out to be the best way to experience it. The sci-fi weirdness was a little daunting at first, but I had an absolute blast as the story slowly unraveled. This film is a high-concept sci-fi black comedy that also marks a major cinematic milestone: it is the first English-language feature from South Korean auteur Bong Joon Ho since his historic, Best Picture-winning triumph with “Parasite.”Mickey Barnes is a man who joins a dangerous space colonization mission after falling into serious debt on Earth. Assigned the role of an “Expendable,” Mickey is sent on deadly assignments knowing that every time he dies, a new clone of him is regenerated with most of his memories intact. While exploring the icy planet Niflheim, Mickey 17 is presumed dead, leading the crew to create Mickey 18.
