Former FBI Director James Comey teased that he may apply for a cut of President Donald Trump’s new $1.776 billion “Anti-Weaponization Fund.” “It’s to compensate people who’ve been targeted by the Justice Department for, they say, personal, political or ideological reasons,” Comey told CNN’s Jake Tapper on Monday. “So I’m guessing I’ll be in line. I hope I’ll be ahead of those who savagely beat police officers and sacked the Capitol.” The Justice Department agreed to set up the $1.8 billion fund to “provide a systematic process to hear and redress claims of others who suffered weaponization and lawfare” in exchange for Trump settling his private $10 billion lawsuit against his own government. The president reportedly won’t receive any direct compensation from this arrangement, but critics have labeled it a “slush fund” that could award payouts to the thousands of people Trump pardoned who were charged with crimes related to the Jan. 6, 2021, insurrection at the U.S. Capitol. Asked on Tuesday if “individuals who assaulted Capitol Hill police officers” would be eligible for payment from the fund, acting Attorney General Todd Blanche responded, “Anybody in this country is eligible to apply, if they believe they are a victim of weaponization.” Sen. @ChrisVanHollen (D-MD): "Will individuals who assaulted Capitol Police officers be eligible for this fund?" It appears that they’re serious,” Comey told Tapper of the fund.Comey, an outspoken critic of Trump, is facing yet another federal indictment, this time for posting a photo of seashells arranged to read “86 47” on social media. The Justice Department claimed the message was a threat aimed at Trump, the 47th president.Comey jokingly told Tapper he’ll talk to his lawyers about applying for Trump’s fund, since “it certainly sounds intended for someone like me.” “I don’t think that that’s how it’s intended, but I understand what you’re saying,” Tapper said.
