RAI Cinema International Distribution has scored sales at the Cannes market with new works by veteran Italian auteurs Mario Martone and Gianni Amelio and promising newcomer Irene Dionisio that are tipped to bow in Venice.
“Trick,” which stars Toni Servillo (“The Great Beauty”) (first look image above) is the latest feature by Martone who was in the Cannes competition last year with “Fuori.” Naples-set “Trick” has been picked up following a teaser presentation at the Cannes Marché du Film by Benelux (Paradiso Films), Brazil (Orta Film), Switzerland (Morandini), and Greece (Dream Team Film), Portugal (Leopardo Filmes), and Bulgaria (Cinelibri).
Amelio’s “No Pain,” toplining Valeria Golino and Alessandro Borghi (“The Eight Mountains”) wasacquired for Bulgaria by Beta Film and for Switzerland by Morandini.
“Idda,” the sohomore drama from emerging director Irene Dionisio, whose 2016 debut “Pawn Streets” launched from Venice’s Critics’ Week, was sold by RAI Cinema to Bulgaria through Beta Film and to Brazil’s Orta Film. Starring Italy’s two top rising female stars Tecla Insolia (“Art of Joy”) and Romana Maggiora Vergano (“There’s Still Tomorrow”), “Idda” is about two childhood friends, now in their thirties, who find themselves during a hike up Sicily’s Mount Etna volcano.
