All hangs on which country’s rules will apply to employees

The fate of EU Inc – a planned EU-wide entity aimed at boosting European startups – may hinge on a few key details that could determine exactly what the project means for workers.

The Commission has pitched EU Inc – previously known as the 28th regime – as a way to make it easier for companies to grow across the bloc by creating a recognisable brand that investors can trust with their money, regardless of the size of the EU country involved. The project is also meant to speed up company formation and make it cheaper to set up a business across the bloc.

Commission top brass, including President Ursula von der Leyen, have been adamant that the reform will not come at the cost of workers’ rights. The president promised trade union leaders back in March that “our labour standards will not be put into question”.
